Lisa is a multi-awarded writer, author and public speaker combining her professional background with first-hand experience of disability. She is collaboratively exploring how news professionals can better represent disability and how this positively affects other areas of popular culture. Holding two degrees in media and communications, Lisa has worked in advertising agencies with national and international brands. For years she has strategically and creatively achieved visibility for her client’s messaging and is now helping to ensure more authentic visibility for disability.
AZUCENA CARRASCO-TORONJO · ADVOCACY AND DEVELOPMENT OFFICER
Azucena is a former Spanish journalist with more than fifteen years of experience. She has been a radio and TV host and presenter, both in the entertainment and the news fields. Azucena has done work with the government sector in Australia for the last five years and is a recent Master’s graduate from the University of Queensland in Development Practice with a major in Politics of Global Development. She’s particularly interested in social justice, examining unconscious bias towards gender, foreign accents, and the investigation of development initiatives that can ultimately bring inclusion as a right on its own.
STEFAN AMBRUSTER · PACIFIC CO-ORDINATOR
Stefan Armbruster is the Brisbane-based correspondent for SBS World News and Current Affairs, reporting on Queensland and the Pacific. He was born in Germany and migrated to Australia in the 1970s. His journalism career began in Brisbane at public radio 4ZZZ and worked for a decade in London as a reporter and senior producer for the BBC, Dow Jones and CNBC. Since joining SBS in 2007, he has won numerous national journalism awards for his coverage of Aboriginal & Torres Strait islander, multicultural and Pacific affairs including from the Australian Human Rights Commission and UNAA.
DR NIELS KRAAIER · RESEARCH AND INSIGHTS OFFICER
Niels is a journalist from the Netherlands with nearly two decades of experience. Based as a foreign correspondent in Australia since 2008, he works for a variety of media outlets including radio, print and online platforms. Niels is also an adjunct research fellow in the Griffith Centre for Social and Cultural Research where he specialises in cross-cultural media and communication research. In 2017, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy for his thesis on the impact of national cultures on the work practices of public relations professionals across different countries. Niels is passionate about diversity, inclusion and big fluffy dogs, no matter their breed.
FAITH VALENCIA-FORRESTER · INCLUSION AND EQUITY OFFICER
Faith Valencia-Forrester has worked in radio and television newsrooms both here in Australia and overseas. Starting out in radio in Brisbane, she then worked for the AFN network as a video journalist and television news presenter and producer. After a stint as Media Director at a Media Centre in Tokyo Japan, Faith returned to Australia where she worked for ABC local radio. She was the Queensland Producer and Presenter for The Wire, and has also worked as senior producer for Mornings on 4BC.
